It's been quite the hiatus, and it seems the most appropriate that my first update of the new year reveal my progress on the medallion quilt. It's so incredibly satisfying to hang it up and photograph after every few rows, otherwise I end up looking only at bits and parts as I work on it. I'm starting to have serious anxiety about if I'll actually use this one, or safely store and preserve it for posterity. Seems cruel to pack it away in the dark somewhere, even though its the best way to preserve it. Thousands more hand stitches to go, I guess I have some time to decide.

You certainly have no room to store. It will just have to hang in my hall. ; )

surely you have to use it! at least sometimes. You could get it out at Christmas, or for your birthday week.
Carrie, do you do paper pieceing for this quilt?

I am most definitely a big champion of actually using handmade things like this, but there is something that makes me so sad that someday this will fade and probably have holes. It's all part of it - just has me thinking. Such an appropriately grim January thought.

Mom, sorry this can't come to your house as much as I love you.

Jill, there is paper piecing in the center mariners compass and also the corners in the first round, but the rest is done with careful cutting. I draw straight lines to hand stitch for each seam for precision.

i do not want to even think about how long this must have taken (so far). You are obviously not the instant gratification kind! I am a relative new quilter although sewn all my life and dreamt of quilting all my life, only started realising that time will not wait for me...maybe when i'm old and cannot move i would consider embarking on something like this....Simply beautiful and breathtaking...will pop back to see your progress :)

Carrie.....amazing. I love all the colors and intricacies! I can't imagine doing it by hand! My first quilt class was a completely hand sewn quilt when I was off on maternity leave with Amber....she turns 22 in March AND it is still in the UFO pile!!!!

Hi Carrie..

New visitor here...and I must say, wow, you are such a gifted quilter/crafter/artist. Just to clarify, did you hand stitch each piece of this quilt? Are in sane? I mean seriously, I can't even imagine how many hours this must have taken you, if I'm understanding you correctly. I'm in awe and leaving feeling mesmerized by your level of commitment....
